An InfernotĀ is a small underground room, dug into the “Pietra da Cantoni” rock, with no lighting or ventilation. They can usually be accessed through a cellar and are used to store bottled wine. Their constant temperature and humidity create an excellent environment for preserving the most precious bottles.
There are various types of Infernot: single room, multi-room or corridor-shaped. Three different wall finishes are available: smooth, with natural cracking or with visible pick marks. There are also various types of bottle holder: recess, step or long shelf. Some are decorated and others even have a table dug out of the rock.
Each InfernotĀ is unique and was created by normal people. In short, it represents the material and immaterial heritage of Monferrato.
